Testing for Polystyrene-Tenite-Lucite or Acrylic  
         
 

 

 

  Polystyrene: Soft flexible plastic that allows light to illuminate.  Will melt at fairly low temperature.  Thin construction.  Brittle yet flexible. Made in every color in the rainbow.  Can also be mixed with other colors to create swirls or marbling.

Marbled Polystyrene

 

Tenite: A hard low temperature plastic generally made in Ivory or other light colors.  Thin construction. Not very flexible and breaks easily.  Low temperature for melting.  Known to droop such as its use as attached radio grilles in the 30s and 40s that have a melted or warped look. 

  Tenite Knobs & Grille/Bakelite Case

Lucite:  Clear, soft and flexible.  Can be cut, twisted in heat, bent, etched and made very thick.  Can also be tinted various colors.  

Lucite Clock Frame

Acrylics:  Clear or opaque but allows light to traverse thru.  Stiff, brittle but durable.  Very high use even today.  Little use in radios other then dials or dial scales.  Has a low melting point.  Made in many colors.
