Why pay more for a RadioSalon item?

It’s a question we hear often.

The answer is simple:  we offer items that are professionally finished from the bottom up.

What is involved in the preparation of our items?

First the item is completely disassembled.  This is essential to clean every part.  The item is washed, inside carbons and grime removed, grit and years of built up dirt are cleaned out of the smallest tightest crevices, nooks and crannies.  We use tools that are especially designed to reach into these areas without harming any plastics or metals.  Some of our tools are smaller than toothpicks or matches.  The process is extremely labor intensive.  It’s not unusual to spend 2 hours just on a radio grille and its intricate parts.

Scratches, blemishes, stains and grease are thoroughly removed from the exterior of the item and hand rubbed softly to insure a smooth finish. We don’t use any harsh or abrasive cleaners such as Scrubbing Bubbles or Semi-Chrome but only the gentlest soaps and silicones.  The item is then polished and buffed.  We use the finest buffing wheels, cloths and rouges.  Many times plastics are buffed up to three times with differing levels of rouge to insure a smooth glossy luster.

All our finishers wear gloves to eliminate finger prints and smudges.  The finest camel hair brushes are used to keep the item dusted at all time.

Upon completion the case is bagged and set aside while the chassis, knobs and other parts are dusted, cleaned, polished and electronically repaired (if necessary).  Then the entire item is re-assembled, inspected, tested and photographed.

The finished radios, clocks or phonographs are then packaged and await shipping.  They are not displayed or exposed to any elements such as direct sunlight, dust or touching.

Many times a case might involve plastic or paint repair.  This is a process where we match the existing plastic to fill, seal or bond.  On occasion touch up paint is used to match a nick or chip.  The time involved can range from 2 to 24 hours to completely cure and dry.  Add this to the 6 to 12 hours to complete everything and you’ll see why our items our in a realm unlike any others.

Sure if you want to try to accomplish what we do by yourself it’s a great hobby and time well spent.  However, if you want to have a radio, phonograph or clock ready to display and enjoy then our merchandise if just for you.  Will it cost a more than a dirty, used looking old item in dire need of a makeover?  Of course.  But we try to be cost conscious while paying our finishers and repair people a decent wage.

We love our work and are proud all our radios, phonographs or clocks before they go to their new homes. We hope you enjoy and cherish what you purchase from RadioSalon too.
